Exigency

Throughout this course, you have studied the communication practices of workplace writers. You have compared a professional writing style to an academic style, studied the elements of style that facilitate clarity in communications, and explored the importance of information visualizations. You have reviewed research by NACE and ETS regarding the competencies necessary across professional careers, and you have viewed those competencies from specific professions and speculated about the top 6 competencies required in a particular profession, including finance, accounting, marketing, communications, data analytics, and entrepreneurship. On top of all that, you have analyzed a recent report by Microsoft and LinkedIn regarding ways generative AI is changing the workplace, research reports on the cognitive competencies of contemporary generative AI tools, and theoretical speculations about when and if

Now, this capstone assignment challenges you to synthesize all of you’ve learned about a professional writing style, workplace competencies, and the potential impact of AI to disrupt workforce processes and human labor in professional settings. It challenges you to identify your strengths and to reflect on your career plans, especiallly in light of threats of generative AI to traditional professional practices.

Creative Challenge #7 – Professional Development Plan

Revision: pic of a chrysalis transforming into a butterfly
Invention, Revision, Problem Solving — these are processes of metamorphosis. Just as the butterfly transforms itself — from egg, larva, pupa, to adult — so can the writer transform a weak first draft of a text. Requirements

  1. Word Count
    • Place the word count at the top of the page. At a minimum, you need 1,000 words, excluding references. If desired, you can go up to 1500 words. IOWs, have about 5 to 6 pages of text. That said, the total page count may be 10 to 12 given you need space for your (1) visualizations; (2) references
  2. Write with a professional, reflective, and future-oriented style. Adopt a professional writing style. Go beyond generalities and superficial claims. Ground your plans in specifics, such as courses you want to take, certificates you want to earn, or internships you hope to be awarded
  3. Citations
    1. When referencing your goals and the workforce competencies you need to develop,
      • briefly define them. Paraphrase and quote from the workplace competency studies we we reviewed. Clarify how important the competencies are from the perspective the employers. Address how generative AI may change the importance of these competencies and the need for human workers.
      • Use at least six credible sources in total, including at least two based on interviews.
        • Cite all sources in APA 7 style. Use in-text citation conventions when quoting, paraphrasing or summarizing workplace literacies or interviews. Note an extended list of references at the end of the document is not sufficient
          • Three or more citations must focus on workforce competencies (e.g., NACE, ETS, peer-reviewed articles on professional skills).
          • Two or more must discuss how workplaces are changing due to emerging technologies (e.g., Microsoft/LinkedIn reports, McKinsey studies on AI).
          • Two more more can come from your interviews and be cited accordingly in APA 7
  4. Required Sections and Information Visualizations
    1. The workplace competencies across professions and those specifically required in your chosen profession
      • ground your discussion of workforce competencies in evidence, using at least 4 of the articles we read about workforce competencies, at least two of the interviews you conducted, and your team’s work on the specific credentials and competencies needed to succed in a specific career
      • create a visualization to accompany your review.

    2. An Assessment of your Existing Workplace Competencies.
      • Identify your current strengths using workplace competency terms introduced by NACE and ETS (e.g., communication, digital technology, problem-solving, teamwork, leadership. Don’t just claim you have those competencies: prove you have them. Provide specific examples or evidence (e.g., coursework, internships, part-time jobs, certificates, extracurricular activities) that illustrate these competencies.
      • Create a visualization of your current workplace competencies
    3. An Assessment of Your Values and Goals
      • Reflect on your values
      • Create an visualization of your values

Specify the career goals you want to achieve within the next three, five, and ten, years (e.g., a particular job title, role, or industry).
      • Create a visualization

    4. A Section on AI and the Future of Work
      • Include a reflection on how AI is likely to alter your career path. Be sure to cite specific studies about the potential future of AI on the job market.
    5. Section on competencies you need to develop to obtain and thrive in the career you seek. Cite relevant research from NACE, ETS, or other sources that address workforce competencies.

A heuristic to define goals and workplace competencies that need to be developed.

    6. A Three-Year Development Plan
      1. Outline the competencies you wish to improve or acquire over the next three years.
      2. Embed a visual component (e.g., a Gantt chart, table, or timeline) within this section.
        • This visualization should map out goals, major tasks, milestones, and projected completion dates.
        • For instance, you might show monthly or semester-based steps like “Complete Advanced Excel Certification by Month 6,” “Secure Data Analytics Internship by Year 1,” etc.
      3. Explain how you will measure progress (e.g., obtaining certifications, building portfolios, acquiring mentorships, or completing projects).

  • Design a Cohesive Narrative: Show how your current competencies connect to your future goals, and how you plan to bridge any gaps.
  • Stay Adaptable: Emphasize openness to learning and growth, especially in response to AI’s evolving influence.
