Definition – What is Professional Writing?

Exigency
Writing in school settings tends to focus on academic writing genres such as essay writing. Often the audience for student work is the teacher-as-examiner or, in graduate school, expert-to-expert. As a result, students are often unfamiliar with the discourse conventions, genres, and rhetorical moves of professionals in workplace settings.
Writing Prompt
For an audience that doesn’t understand the difference between academic and professional writing, write a 400 to 500 word summary that clarifies the similarities and differences between these two major styles of writing.
Your instructor will be looking to see
- that you put the word count on top of page and didn’t count the references in the word count. You should have between 400 and 500 words
- that you use a professional writing style
- that you understand the need for exemplification in workplace writing
- that you support claims with evidence
- that you use APA 7 when you quote, paraphrase, or summarize the three assigned readings. Be sure to reference all three sources.
- that you can write college-level, reader-based prose.count on top of page.

- Responsiveness to Prompt: Is your summary accurate and complete? Have you cited at least three of the assigned readings?
- Elements of Style (clarity, brevity, coherence, flow, inclusivity, simplicity, unity)
- Professional Design (headings, bullet points, scannability)
- APA 7 Citation (quote, paraphrase, and summarize from all three assigned readings)
