Text

Text refers to anything that can be read or analyzed (e.g., a mathematical equation, a computer code, a painting, a clay pot.)

Texts are the embodiment of thought. Thought finds shape and form in text.

Texts are composed in Medium, Media (e.g., print, internet, TV, radio).

People use multiple literacies (e.g., Digital Literacy, Quantitative Literacy , Visual Literacy) to create texts.


A Text is much more than a book or a novel.

Texts are any symbolic action. Anything that can be read or analyzed is a text. Texts are symbolic systems: they presuppose some sort of symbolic sign and an underlying meaning associated with that sign (see Semiotics @ Wikipedia).

When we use tools and materials to communicate with others, we are creating texts.

It’s is commonplace for scholars to read a text from a particular theoretical perspective, such as Capitalism, Marxism, Psychoanalysis, Behaviorism, Deconstruction, Modernism, Postmodernism.
